I have enjoyed trying out many different headphones over the years, as both a voiceover artist and music lover. And hands down, my all time favorite pair have been the Sony MDR-V6. They’re comfortable, durable and no matter what type of music you listen to, they sound great.

But somewhere around 2015, the V6’s were discontinued and the MDR-7506 took their place. Now, I have to do everything I can to keep my V6’s in pristine condition. Unfortunately,  the original ear pads have started to flake. Not bad considering they are nearly 30 years old.  So, I chose a $10 replacement from Geekria.

History

The MDR-V6 was introduced in 1985 and became popular with sound engineers and disc jockeys. The headphones were listed as having a very wide frequency response and were convenient for travel as they could be folded and carried in an included leatherette bag. The critics loved them. In fact, Consumer Reports wrote in 1989 that “there seems little reason to look beyond the check-rated Sony MDR-V6. That model combines the highest accuracy we’ve measured in headphones, comfortable design, moderate weight, and enviable bass reproduction.”

In 1993, the headphones were described as “almost-industry-standard” for the monitoring of location sound recording for film and television. Newer designs were introduced by Sony, most notably, the Sony MDR-7506 and MDR-V600, yet the MDR-V6 continued to be produced.

Sony MDR-V6 Discontinued

It’s possible Sony discontinued them feeling that the build quality was not up to par to those models made in the 90’s. If you’re looking for near identical replacement, then the MDR-7506 would be it as finding an almost new V6 could set you back a few hundred dollars. Presently, the MDR-7506 sells for around $100.

What do you think? Personally, I’ve always been a fan of Sony headphones and the MDR-V6 has been my go-to for years. They’re comfortable, sound great, and are durable enough to last over the years.

Have you ever tried out this particular model or any other Sony headphones? Let me know in the comments below – I’d love to hear your thoughts!
